Art about Digital

I have been coming across few artists/designers lately who are using the internet/search engines/social media data as subjects for their work and I find this really interesting.

Julius Popp - has created a few pieces based on live interenet searches and the words that we type into search engines. Below is a waterfall, called Bit fall, where the words appear only for a second in the falling water, but it's pretty amazing I would have loved to see it for real! There's a video here of the artist talking about his work where you can see the piece in action.

This is the first piece I came across called Web Bit.code. It is a similar idea, the piece is a large mechanically operated ‘screen’ consisting of identical rotating black and white tracks made up of the 1s and 0s of basic binary digital code. Controlled by a specially designed software, the tracks will rotate individually, pausing at regular intervals to display the most frequently used key words taken from recent web feeds of current news sites. It's on display in the V&A in a new show Decode:digital design installations which opens this month. Think it might be time for a trip back to London!

''UXUS followed up the Home Reflections presentation with “Interaction”, an installation celebrating H&M Home’s transition from an online and catalogue retailer, to a physical showroom where one can indulge all the senses, especially touch. With the dominance of digital systems in our world, we explore the possibility of discovering through direct interaction. A large wooden display unit presents a series of pulleys and levers that are attached to various products. An action causes a reaction, pull and push, discovering through the physical exploration of an analog search engine. The display sits within 34m2.''

About UXUS

''Founded in Amsterdam in 2003, UXUS is an independent award wining design consultancy specializing in strategic design solutions for Retail, Communication, Hospitality, Architecture and Interiors. UXUS creates “Brand Poetry”, fusing together art and design, and creating new brand experiences for its clients worldwide. We define “Brand Poetry” as an artistic solution for commercial needs. Artistic solutions target emotions; emotions connect people in a meaningful way. Design gives function, art gives meaning, poetry expresses the essence.''

I am blown away by this piece of work I love it so much. It is so inspiring that a design can really be anything you want it to be - it is problem solving, and these problems are always changing. Bringing H&M back to the store and away from the internet is an interesting idea in itself and they have approached it in a fresh and unique way!

Essay Tutorial

An early essay tutorial for me. So far I was pretty pleased with the work I'd done on my essay, 'a good foundation to improve on' in my first tutorial. I had referenced and researched to high heaven so just had to concentrate on writing. Since then I ruthlessly edited and tried to structure better and make my arguments more clear.

This time, I felt I got some good pointers on how to perfect my writing for the final draft, mainly ideas on structure and layout. I hope that coming up with a strong but simple visual design solution for my essay will help to articulate my points better. I had tried to write in an entertaining and personal way that isn't how I would usually write an essay, and Hitch wasn't sure about this, but that's what they asked us to do (?) so in the end we decided it was fine.

I am so desperate to get a first for this essay... I hope I am not reaching to high, but I've been getting 67 and 68 for every essay I've done and I didn't work as hard as I could have. I've tried to make sure I've improved on everything and push this as far as I can, but i'm still unable to get a definitive answer on what that *thing* is I need to do go from a 2.1 to a 1st! I really don't want to miss out this time!

Droga 5

Droga5 is an agency which I came across in Campaign over summer. The company was set up by Dave Droga, an Australian, and they currently have an office in Sydney and New York. They work a lot with charities and on political and government campaigns. And they don't specialise in any particular media or visual style.

This is a link to work they did for the Obama Campaign in America which is everything that you wouldn't expect it to be. It's quite controversial and I have to admitt when I first watched it I was surprized something like this had been created for politics. I guess I always thought of America as being behind the UK when it comes to forward thinking, especially in Politics, but I actually think they are way ahead of us in terms of innovation in their voting campaigns. This campaign is based on great problem solving and it feels so much more honest (even if it's still a political ploy deep down) than anything I have ever seen in Britain. I have been getting really interested in political work lately, and am thinking or changing the slant of my essay to research further into this area.

Below are some posters done for Unicef 'Tap' water campaign that went across print, viral, web and much more.

''My objective isn’t to build the biggest agency in the world or the most creative agency in the world—I want to build the most influential agency in the world. When I first launched the agency three years ago, I made a statement that I think people thought was just a throwaway thing, but I really meant it. I want us to get involved with things that matter.''

To end up working at an agency with similar values to this one would be an amazing accomplishment for me!

London

I guess I'm beginning to sell out... I just love London and I can't get enough of it! And the best thing about being a northerner is that they love you =) Peter Saville was right, northerners do work harder and don't the southerners seem to know it!

Well, on Tuesday I blagged my way into a social media day at Ogilvy in London and rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous of social media. haha, not quite but almost. I met the marketing director of YouTube, Spotify, Last FM, Skype and Bebo. I talked to an American guy who worked on Obama's facebook campaign. I also met the guy who my whole essay was inspired by- David Bausola - who is the founder of this new idea called Purefold. Its this company who work with friendfeed and creative commons and Ridley Scott films and they basically create content based on Live internet feeds for brands and then hand them over to the public, who can do what they want with them. http://www.ag8.com/people:index

It's the future. =)
