Browser and Choice website

So, one task in paticular I have been putting off for literally weeks is designing a website to go with my Browser and choice campaign promoting browsers.  The initial part of the project was the creation of a fake 'estate agents' window to capture people's attention, and then lead them to a website where they can learn all about browsers, find the one that's right for them and download it!

Here's a few great websites I've been looking at for inspiration, not only great concepts, but innovative ideas about what websites can offer and how they can take you on an experience.

Below are images from 'read a book at work' website (which is no longer available) a campaign by a New Zealand agency for the council to encourage people to read more.  Basically, they released loads of e-books for free but designed them as windows desk tops and power point presentations so you don't get caught out by your boss! genius!

My website is all ready for my portfolio now =)

Google Chrome

This has been a very drawn out project for me.  One that I started researching at the beginning of the term and intended to finish for the YCN deadline in March.  I've actually had this idea since then but for some reason I've found it impossible to execute it and it's taken ages for me to decide how to display it.  Because it was an idea that was really a proposal and also was based a lot on the copy I wrote for the adverts this made it very hard!  Eventually, I realised that the best and only way to display this in my portfolio was to actually do it.  I went to Homes 4 u on Oxford Road and asked them if I could stick my adverts up in the window.  They thought it was very strange and couldn't quite understand what I was doing but I managed to persuade them to let me, only if I turned up at half 7 when they opened.

However, this was definitely worth it as now the idea is much more bought to life for my portfolio and it really shows off my idea in the best light.  I'm glad to have another advertising brief in my portfolio for when I leave, and this one is a little different from the normal., but stuck very much to the brief.  Overall, I'm really pleased with how this project finally turned out, now I'm just in the process of designing a sample of the website which the 'Browser and choice' shop window is directing viewers too!

YCN

I have spent most of this week preparing for YCN to send it off via uni for free. Wednesday morning was very manic but I managed just about to mount my boards! I entered two briefs - the Alcohol Awareness project from term 1 which I have had a lot of great feedback for, and also work I did for Google Chrome Brief. I wasn't 100% happy with my visuals for this project, I've been working on it since the beginning of term intermittently but haven't actually spent much time on it. I finally came up with an idea at the weekend and madly tried to execute it in time. My gut instinct tells me my idea is really strong - maybe that will be enough - but I feel I have a bit more time and care to put into developing the brief to make it portfolio worthy. This will be another task for over Easter so watch this space!

Google Chrome:
The brief was to educate and promote browser choice to the wider public. It was open to any media and actively encouraged to be different.

My idea was based around the amount of time people spend in their browsers a day (on average 5-6 hours) and the fact they should be comfortable - the browser is your internet living room so to speak. So, I wanted to encourage people to shop around for your browser and find one that suits you, just like you would shop for your furniture or home. I designed a fake estate agents called Browser & choice to bring this idea to life.

I feel the branding of Browser & Choice needs to be worked on first - I need to find a line between an exciting/eye catching/ engaging design and something which has the traits of an estate agents and conveys the humour in the idea. A tall order! Once I have done this I will be able to apply it to all my avenues - the website, installations/exhibitions, strategically placed 'For Sale' signs and direct mail/posters, which will make it a much more credible and all round campaign for my portfolio.
